ByteDance owned TikTok is now being used as a Surveillance Tool by the Chinese after being caught illegally storing data and sending it to China. This has resulted in a Lawsuit in California.
Tiktok is being used as a Surveillance Tool by Chinese
Tiktok has been served up with a lawsuit after ByteDance, and its Chinese parent company take user content such as video draft without their permission and have unclear privacy policies. It raises concerns about the possibility of using data collected by TikTok to identify, profile and track users in the US. Because it uses this data to sell targeted ads, the lawsuit claims, the company benefits from this alleged activity.
The lawsuit has been brought in by Misty Hong, a resident of California. The prosecutor claims that the company has allegedly violated a federal computer fraud law, the California Constitution’s right to privacy and other laws.
The data ranges from Biometric and Location data from the videos from the users. Misty claimed that after she downloaded the application, TikTok made an account for her automatically and had uploaded some of her drafts to their servers.
The company allegedly uses various tactics to disguise the transfer of user data. Even if a user removes the phone, biometric and user data are still collected, the complaint claims. As of now, there have been no comments made by the prosecutor and ByteDance.
